1. complete an insurance pre-licensing course

illinois requires those seeking an insurance license to complete the pre-licensing before taking the state licensing exam. prelicensing courses with kaplan give you the best chance of passing – our pass rates are among the highest in the industry.

• Pre-class study (must be completed before attending live class): 12.5 hours (life only), 12.5 hours (health only), 25 (life and health); 12.5 (property only), 12.5 (loss only), 25 (property and loss)
• class test in illinois, a graded class test is given to assess your readiness for the state test. the test must pass 70% or better to receive a certificate of completion.

pre-licensing education exemptions

Applicants who have obtained one or more of the following designations or certifications may be exempt from pre-licensing education requirements for the indicated lines of authority:

• a college degree in insurance

Adjuster license requirements

The Designated Home State (DHS) Appraiser license is available to individuals who are 1) residents of a state that does not license appraisers, or 2) individuals who are business appraisers and reside in a state that it only licenses independent appraisers and wants to designate another state as its home state.

After completing my pre-licensing, how should I prepare for test day?

Online booking is the most efficient way for candidates to schedule their exam. candidates should go to www.pearsonvue.com/il/insurance to make an online exam reservation. new users must create an account. The candidate will need to complete all required fields, which are preceded by an asterisk (*), on the online form to create an ID and be assigned a password. step-by-step instructions will guide the candidate through the rest of the exam booking process. Candidates must make an online reservation at least twenty-four (24) hours in advance of their desired exam date. Candidates wishing to make a telephone reservation at (800) 274-0402 must do so at least twenty-four (24) hours prior to their desired exam date (unless an electronic check is used for payment, as detailed below) .

Candidates who are religiously unable to take an exam that is offered only on Saturdays may request an exam date other than Saturday. Such request must be put in writing on official paper by the candidate’s religious advisor and faxed to (610) 617-9397 or mailed to Pearson Vue. exams other than Saturdays are available by prior arrangement only.

Before making a reservation, candidates must have the following:

• legal name, address, social security number, daytime telephone number, and date of birth.
• the name of the exam(s).
• preferred test date and test center location (a list of test centers is on the back cover of this handbook).
• A current copy of a signed pre-licensing course certificate for all exams except Public Adjuster. The original certificate is not required, but the certificate must be current. acceptable forms of a copy may be a fax, an email, or may be on a device such as a telephone. All course completion certificates are valid for one (1) year from the course completion date. candidates must take the test within one (1) year of the completion date of the pre-licensing educational course.
• Only first-time candidates will be required to present their pre-licensing course completion certificate before being allowed to take the exam. repeating candidates are not required to submit their certificate.

All candidates must bring identification that the test center deems acceptable on test day. Candidate must present two forms of current signature identification. the primary ID must be government issued and have a photo with a signature and the secondary ID must contain a valid signature. identification must be in English.

If the ID presented has an embedded signature that is not visible (microchip), difficult, or impossible to read, the candidate must present another form of ID from the primary or secondary ID list that contains a visible signature.

pearson vue does not recognize grace periods. For example, if a candidate’s driver’s license expired yesterday and the state allows a 30-day grace period to renew the ID, the ID is considered expired.

How is the exam?

The following policies are observed at each test center. Candidates who violate any of these policies will not be allowed to finish the exam and will be dismissed from the test center forfeiting their exam fee.

• No personal items are allowed in the testing room. Personal items include but are not limited to: cell phones, handheld computers or other electronic devices, pagers, watches, wallets, purses, firearms or other weapons, hats, bags, coats, books and/or notes, pens or pencils .
• Candidates must store all personal items in a secure area as directed by the administrator, or return items to their vehicle. all electronic devices must be turned off before being stored in a locker. the test center is not responsible for lost, stolen, or misplaced personal items.
• You are not allowed to study in the test center. No visitors, children, family members, or friends are allowed in the testing center.
• Dictionaries, books, documents (including the draft), and reference materials are not permitted in the exam room (unless permitted by the exam sponsor), and candidates are strongly advised not to bring such materials to the testing center. Upon entering and sitting in the testing room, the test administrator will provide the candidate with note-taking or calculation materials and any other items specified by the exam sponsor. The candidate may not write on these items before the exam begins or remove them from the exam room.
• It is forbidden to eat, drink, chew gum, smoke and/or make noises that disturb other candidates during the exam.
• break policies are set by the exam sponsor. most sponsors allow unscheduled breaks. To request an unscheduled break, the candidate must raise their hand to get the administrator’s attention. the exam clock will not stop while the candidate takes a break.
• Candidates must leave the testing room during all breaks. however, candidates may not leave the floor or building for any reason during this time, unless specified by the administrator and exam sponsor. If a candidate is found to have left the floor or building, they will not be allowed to proceed with the exam and may forfeit their exam fees.
• While taking a break, candidates can access personal items that are stored during the exam only if needed, for example, personal medications that need to be taken at a specific time. however, a candidate must receive administrator permission before accessing personal items that have been stored. Candidates are not permitted access to other items, including but not limited to cell phones, test notes, and study guides, unless specifically permitted by the test sponsor.
• any candidate found to be causing a disturbance of any kind or engaging in any kind of misconduct, giving or receiving aid; use notes, books, or other aids; take part in an act of identity theft; or remove test materials or notes from the test room, you will be summarily removed from the test and reported to the state licensing agency.
• Decisions regarding disciplinary action are the responsibility of the state licensing agency.

How is the exam scored?

Each mainline exam (Life, Accident & Health, Property & Casualty) is taken in a multiple-choice format and consists of two parts. Part 1 deals with basic knowledge of insurance products. part 2 covers illinois insurance laws, regulations, and practices.

Each section of the exam is timed separately, and candidates cannot return to a section once the time has expired.

The exam may contain previous questions. Pretest questions are questions about which statistical information is collected for use in constructing future exams. the answers to the pretest questions do not affect the score. pretest questions are mixed with graded questions and are not identified.

When candidates complete the exam, they will receive a score report marked “pass” or “fail”. Candidates who pass the exam will receive a score report that includes information on how to apply for a license.

Candidates who fail the exam will receive a score report that includes a numerical score and diagnostic information related to the general portion of the exam, as well as retest information.

Each exam is divided into two parts: the general section and the state section. Candidates who pass one section of the exam and fail the other must retake only the failed section within 90 days. If after 90 days both sections have not been passed, it will be necessary to take the full exam again. Illinois requires candidates to pass both parts of a mainline exam within 90 days to be eligible for licensure. candidates are responsible for knowing which part of an exam needs to be retaken and for monitoring the 90 days.

Reservations cannot be made to retest at the test center. candidates must wait 24 hours before making a reexamination reservation.

The above information does not apply to the Motor Vehicle and Public Adjuster exams, each of which has only one section consisting of general and state-specific topics. for candidates who fail the public adjuster exam the first time, the law requires that these public adjuster candidates must wait 7 days before rescheduling and taking the exam. for candidates who do not pass the public adjuster exam the second or subsequent times, the law requires that these public adjuster candidates must wait 30 days before scheduling and take the exam after each attempt.

Once you have passed your state licensing exam, you are ready to apply for an insurance license. after 5 days, you can apply for your license at www.nipr.com.

it will be assigned an npn. This unique identifier is assigned through the license application process and is used to track individuals and business entities nationwide. many states use the npn to replace a producer’s license number.
