what is pet health insurance?
Caring for a pet is really very expensive and the costs of veterinary care are increasing. you could suddenly be hit with expensive emergency care or exam fees. Not to scare you, but a pet health insurance policy could be the difference between being able to afford to save your pet’s life or not.
If an accident or illness results in a costly vet bill, your insurance will reimburse you for part of the cost of what your pet needs to get better. A standard pet health insurance policy will help cover the costs of diagnoses, procedures, and medications to treat your dog or cat’s eligible accidents and illnesses. (More on all of that later!).
You may already be familiar with some of the basic terms, but we’ll break them down anyway…here’s what you really get with pet health insurance:
what does pet health insurance cover?
A basic pet health insurance policy covers the costs of diagnosis (such as X-rays or blood tests) and treatment (such as surgery or medication) for accidents and illnesses. Different insurance companies will offer different options, so you may need to do some research to find out which is the best pet insurance for your furry family member.

When you’re looking, consider what kinds of medical expenses your pet already faces and what kinds of things are worth getting insurance coverage for. Some pet owners may decide that an accident-only plan is right for them, while others may want to ensure they are reimbursed for preventative costs, such as vaccinations, that can help prevent their dog or cat from developing illness. In addition, it is important to take into account possible additional costs, such as fees for visits to the veterinarian and physical therapy, which are not included in the basic accident and illness coverage.
In general, you can expect your pet’s insurance to cover the costs of a variety of problems that we hope your pet never experiences. here are some examples:
the list of things it’s covered for is actually much longer than the table above. A lemonade pet health insurance policy is an open-risk policy, meaning almost everything is covered, unless it is specifically stated that it is not covered. therefore, it is very important to know what pet insurance does not cover.

It doesn’t matter which pet insurance company you go with, or how much coverage you add to your policy… you’ll never be covered for everything that could happen to your pet. p>
which includes things that happen during a waiting period, pre-existing conditions, and recurring conditions.
In general, a pet health insurance policy will only cover things that happen while your pet is insured, and uses waiting periods to protect the rest of the insured from someone buying a policy just to cover one procedure and then it’s dropped (that’s not fair to everyone else!) a lemonade pet insurance policy has three different waiting periods that determine when you can file a claim:
- two days for accidents
- fourteen sick days
- six months for cruciate ligament events
- diagnostics: blood tests, x-rays, MRIs, CT scans, and lab work
- procedures: ambulatory, specialized and emergency care, hospitalization and surgery
- medications: injections or prescription drugs
- vet visit fees. fees that veterinarians may charge for their time and labor when bringing in your pet after an accident or illness.
- physical therapy. physical therapy, acupuncture and hydrotherapy to help your dog during the recovery process.
- dental disease. procedures like tooth extractions and root canals, and treatments for things like gingivitis and periodontal disease.
- behaviour conditions. veterinarian-recommended therapy and medications for behavioral conditions such as anxiety and aggression.
- end of life and memory. Veterinarian-recommended eeuthanasia, as well as cremation and memorial items to commemorate your pet.
These waiting periods begin on the start date of your policy. We can only offer reimbursement for your claim after the applicable waiting period ends.
Your policy also won’t cover conditions that were diagnosed, or for which your pet showed symptoms, before those waiting periods end. these are called pre-existing conditions.
so, while diabetes treatment is covered under a basic policy, you will only be reimbursed for eligible costs if your pet is diagnosed with diabetes (or if test results show elevated glucose levels) later your policy was already active.
Your policy likely won’t cover experimental treatments like cbd oils (wow!) or cat sound baths, and you’ll usually only receive coverage for things that are necessary due to an accident or illness. For a more complete look at what to expect, you can check out this article on what your pet insurance doesn’t cover.
who is covered by pet health insurance?
When you get pet insurance, you own the policy and your pet is covered. So, even if you’re the policyholder, you can’t use pet health insurance for wisdom teeth removal…you can’t use it for other pets, either.
A pet insurance policy will not cover all pet owners living under the same roof, nor will it cover you for more than one pet. so if your fur family includes more than four legs, you’ll want to make sure you have a separate policy for each of your pets… you won’t be able to claim vet bills for a cat that isn’t covered (but if you and your spouse share a cat, both can file claims). Plus, if you have more than one pet, you can get a multi-pet discount.
how can you customize a pet health insurance policy?
Different pet insurance companies will offer different types of coverage for your pet’s health care. At lemonade, we have a few different ways to customize your policy.
For starters, a basic lemonade pet health insurance policy will cover your dog or cat for the following, in the event of an unexpected accident or illness:
So if you have to pay expensive vet bills if your pet needs to undergo cancer treatments, you’ll be covered. the same goes for broken bones, allergies, ingestion of toxic foods, and more. Of course, this coverage is not totally unlimited, which is one of the reasons we offer optional add-ons to your policy, such as fees for vet visits, physical therapy, dental disease, behavioral conditions, and end of life and remembrance, as well like two great preventive care packages to help you extend your coverage and create the perfect policy for you and your pet.
lemonade preventative care
While a basic pet accident and illness health insurance policy will cover you for the unexpected things in your pet family’s future, adding preventative care to your coverage can help with expenses you’re already spending on . You’re probably already paying more than the cost of our preventative package for your pet’s ongoing medical care, and by adding it to a lemonade pet insurance policy, you’ll be covered for all sorts of things that help keep your pet healthy, like your annual wellness exam, blood tests, immunizations and more.
As a bonus, we’ll even give you access to chat with our pet health experts.

If you decide not to add preventive care, you can still choose to include stand-alone add-ons to help pay for other costs of caring for your pet.
Lemonade Pet Insurance offers five optional add-ons that you can bundle into your policy. here’s what they can help cover:
You can also customize your pet insurance payment structure. it’s easier to explain by looking at what a pet health insurance policy costs. ready?
how much does pet health insurance cost?
A lemonade pet health insurance plan starts at $10/month for cats and dogs, but there are several factors that can affect your monthly premium amount.
Dog insurance tends to be more expensive than a cat policy, and some breeds will cost more than others. The age of your pet and where you live can also have an impact on the cost of pet insurance, so the best thing to do is shop around and compare pet insurance quotes from several different insurance companies.
Don’t forget you can customize your pet insurance plan by adjusting your coinsurance, annual deductible and annual limits to customize insurance coverage and give your pet the care he needs.
Changing your coinsurance, deductible, and annual limit are the easiest ways to lower your monthly premium…but remember, a lower price means less coverage. the lower your coinsurance or annual limit, the less you pay each month. Choosing a higher deductible will also keep your monthly price lower.
Now, while you may be able to lower your premium by 10% or 15% by making one of these changes…remember that while adjusting these reimbursement levels may lower your monthly payments, it will mean you’re covered for less when a costly vet bill rolls in.
how do pet insurance claims work with my vet?
since lemonade pet works on reimbursement, you can visit your pet at any vet you want in the us. provided that you are licensed to provide veterinary care in the state in which you operate.
You would pay the bill for your pet’s care or treatment up front, and then send those receipts to us on the lemonade mobile app for reimbursement. our claims team will review to make sure the situation you are claiming is covered by your policy and will reimburse you the amount you are eligible for on the claim.
